BAGEL
It's been well documented that the New York Bagel isn't what it once was. Middle America's taste for a doughy, over sweetened version of the classic nosh has worked its way back to the source. The great New York bagel may be extinct. But a better-than-pretty good one can still be found, particularly at Daniel's Bagels (569 Third Avenue, between 37th and 38th Streets; 972-9733). Less swollen than Ess-aBagel’s, less sugary than H&H's, Daniel's have a proper crust and insides that aren't all squishy, delivering the proper cement-doughnut texture. And if you want the full New York bagel experience-say you're trying to straighten out a suburbanite pal-order one with the whitefish, which is as good as Daniel's lox.
